I first discovered Block back in May last year through his album “The Last Single Guy”. After that, I wrote about “Whitecaps On The Hudson“ and “Lead Me Not Into Penn Station”, and it’s been a pleasure following his music since then. This year he’s back with “Love Crash” and I honestly think it’s one of those albums that keeps giving you reasons to stay until the last track.
The album never tries to be crowded or loud which is great and I really loved how it stays more on the relaxed side. It lets the songs breathe through thoughtful lyrics, memorable melodies and a voice that kept my attention the whole way through. Block has a raw vocal tone that fits these songs perfectly and you can hear the years of experience behind every performance.
I really enjoyed the variety across the album. Some moments lean into acoustic arrangements while others open up into a fuller sound and the balance works really well. The production is professional without taking attention away from the songwriting. There are plenty of creative ideas, strong melodies and little details that keep each song interesting. Even when the album touches on heartbreak and difficult moments, it never loses its warmth.
I also liked how the lyrics were written and delivered. Every song had its own place on the record and by the time the album ended, I wanted to play it again. I’ve enjoyed following Block’s music over the past year, and this new album is another reminder of why I keep coming back. I truly hope this year brings him even more chances to share new music because I’ll gladly be listening.
