I was planning to write about Martin Lloyd Howard again last month, but every time I sat down to write about his new single “Hidden Andalucia” I got lost in the sound he created with his classical guitar. I’m serious. More than once I found myself listening instead of writing, almost ready to just post the song and leave it at that.
But I think I should say at least a few words about it.
“Hidden Andalucia” is one of those pieces that does not ask for attention in a loud way. It simply starts and before long you’re following wherever the guitar wants to go. The performance is impressive, but not because it tries to show off. It comes from the control, the confidence, and the way every section flows into the next.
Martin brings together different influences in this composition, moving between classical ideas and flamenco-inspired passages without making the piece sound disconnected. The recording quality also deserves a mention. Every note comes through clearly, allowing the guitar to do all the talking.
This is not something that happens by accident. What we’re hearing here is the result of years of experience, practice, and dedication paying off. I think I’m going to shut down the laptop now and spend some time with this piece before I sleep. Martin Lloyd Howard is a talented artist and one I’ll keep writing about whenever I get the chance.
