This lo-fi indie rock album has been on my speakers all morning and I kept going back to it because the melodies stuck with me in a really easy way. Victims of the New Math made something here that reminded me of the rock records I used to play years ago in my room with the volume a little too loud and lyric sheets scattered around the floor. “The Stories That You Weave” has that kind of pull. Not polished to death, just good songs with real character behind them.
The vocal melodies stayed in my head after a couple listens and Thomas Young gives a raw performance that works well with the album’s rough edges. He doesn’t overload the tracks with extra drama. He keeps things direct and that helped the lyrics hit harder for me, especially on songs dealing with love, loss, and trying to stay positive while everything around you gets heavier.
I really liked how each track had its own personality. “You’re a Star” carries that older rock spirit while “Believe in Me” drifts into softer territory without losing the album’s unique identity. The instrumentation of these 12 tracks has grit and warmth at the same time.
I really love this artist’s sound and passion and I’d keep this music close every day. I’ll definitely be writing about Victims of the New Math again, so stay tuned.
