Neal Hooks & the Pocomoke Sound – The Lure

This band is new to me, but listening to their new album “The Lure” honestly made it seem like I had known their music for years already. There’s something easy to settle into here. The album opens with the title track “The Lure” starting soft with acoustic guitar and calm vocals before the sound slowly grows piece by piece. I liked how it kept that emotional mood going without becoming huge or dramatic.

“Old Line State…of Mind” ended up being one of the tracks I stayed with the longest. It has a warm tone and the atmosphere pulled me in right away. I kept replaying it over and over and enjoyed every second of this amazing piece. Then “Bayou Icarus” changes the mood with stronger vocals and heavier instrumentation. The production there really helps the track land harder without losing the band’s identity.

The sixth track “Baby Face” brought a different energy that I wasn’t expecting. The melodies stuck with me fast and I liked the production choices all over that song. Across all 10 tracks, the band keeps a strong level of passion and energy, while the instrumentation stays sharp and raw the whole time.

I also liked that the album sounds polished. You can hear a real band playing together instead of every second being cleaned up too much. After the final song faded, I was fully won over by the songwriting, performances and heart behind it. This debut is a strong beginning and I’ll definitely keep this band on my radar because I’d love to hear where they go next.
