Chxrlotte – What Are You Afraid Of?

We are super excited to share this amazing song “What Are You Afraid Of?” by Brighton-based singer-songwriter Chxrlotte. She is talented and has one of the best and most beautiful voices we’ve heard in months, and her performance in this song is more than professional. The melody of this song is very catchy and mesh with the lyrics perfectly. The atmosphere is unique and the production is smart and polished. This song is a great experience from start to finish! We hope you love it as much as we do!

WHAT THE ARTIST SAYS ABOUT THIS SONG:

Of the new single, Chxrlotte says: I wrote it back when I was in hospital in February. At the time I felt like my depression was destroying everything and everyone around me. The chorus is sarcastically asking people if they wanna be my friend, after I’ve just listed off some of the terrible things I think about myself. The tone of the song is deeply sardonic, obviously, no one in their right mind would want to be my friend after hearing all the things I’ve said about myself, and so I ask them ‘What are you afraid of?

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Chxrlotte is a singer-songwriter based in Brighton, UK.

Her eclectic sound blends elements of pop, neo-folk, and synthwave genres, bouncing between the twee simplicity of ukulele-driven sing-a-longs and the ethereal slow burn of dark synth-pop.

She first gained attention after her debut single Come With Me, written about her favourite fantasy show Good Omens was noticed by Neil Gaiman, one of the show’s co-authors. The song has since been streamed over a million times on Spotify alone. Her most recent release, Hellfire, was chosen to be a promotional song for Jake Tapper’s (American journalist, lead CNN anchor) second novel The Devil May Dance and has been streamed over 70,000 times since the release in May 2021.

Chxrlotte takes inspiration from various musical influences, the biggest one being the hugely popular ‘schizophrenic pop’ duo Twenty One Pilots, emo bands from the late 2000s, and Hamilton (the musical). Asked about describing her music, she said: really, really edgy Twenty One Pilots who got high and watched loads of musical theatre during a songwriting session.

Her lyrics emphasize the importance of mental health and bringing comfort to her listeners: I just want people to feel heard and understood, because there’s a lot of artists that do that for me. If people can relate to my music, they know they’re not alone and it can help them understand how they’re feeling, and that it’s okay to not be okay. She’s also very vocal about current social and political issues and is always down to engage in constructive conversations on Twitter.
