I had the best time with Stephen Jacques and his new album “Les Surfeurs De Santa Cruz”. It didn’t take long before I found myself enjoying what he put together here. Every song brings something worth hearing and the whole album keeps a steady level of energy. The guitars are enjoyable, the drums keep everything moving and the melodies stuck in my head after I finished listening.
Stephen has a great voice but what impressed me even more was the confidence in the way he delivers every line. His performance is professional and it fits the music perfectly. I loved his writing style because it tells stories without making things complicated. The opening track which is my favorite, “Surf Spot Steamer Lane” paints a picture of California’s famous surf spot while touching on freedom, memories and the respect that comes with facing the ocean.
There is a relaxed spirit running through the album but it still carries enough drive to keep every track interesting. Each song has its place and together they make an album that is easy to enjoy from start to end. I honestly loved the melodies, the songwriting, and the way Stephen performs throughout this release. This is an artist I want to keep close because albums like this remind me why I enjoy discovering independent music. I’ll be looking forward to hearing whatever he releases next.
