I stumbled upon this by accident. I was searching for songs for my car playlist since I’m going on a short vacation soon. The Shrubs are new to me but their new single “Let Us In” didn’t take long to click. I really wasn’t expecting too much. I just pressed play and by the end I already knew I’d come back to it. Their music is a raw marriage of Shoegaze and Dream Pop.
The track sits in that mellow and hazy rock space with a nice dreamy touch. Lofi guitars are impressive and the whole thing moves at an easy pace. The first thing that pulled me in was the voice. There’s something unique about how she sings. It’s almost distant but still present enough to hold your attention. I liked how the instrumentation sits right behind her – guitars humming along, drums keeping things grounded without doing too much.
There’s also something going on underneath the surface. The song touches on how people get judged or boxed in, especially around mental struggles. It’s not heavy in the way it presents it, but the idea is there, and it lingers a bit after the song ends.
You can hear some texture in the production. It’s not perfectly clean and that’s actually why I like it. There’s a slightly worn edge to the sound that gives it character without making it hard to listen to.
So this is my first time hearing The Shrubs and I’m already into what they’re doing. The mix of nostalgic vocals and solid rock instrumentation works really well and the melodies stick in no time. I’ll definitely keep this band around and I’m curious what you think about them too.
