Hip-hop, pop and electronic elements meet in Antoin Gibson’s distinctive style on “The Rise and Fall of Eternity”, an EP shaped by strong lyrics and a dark atmosphere. Here, she explores life, death, consciousness and what might exist beyond it, while keeping the music at the centre.
“Introduction to the Unexplained” opens with strong vocals, direct lyrics and a heavy atmosphere. The instrumental design gives the track weight and Gibson’s powerful delivery suits the words well. There are strong bars here, too, and the dark mood is established without the music getting lost in the concept.
I kept going back to “Mirrors Behind the Smoke”. The pop melodies caught me, along with the haunting sound surrounding them. Gibson delivers the song with confidence and I liked the honesty and strength in her writing. The production is professional and the mixing is excellent, the instrumental work has many of detail, and the writing holds the project together. There is a clear purpose behind the music, but the concept never does all the work. Gibson brings real passion to what she makes and her mix of hip-hop, pop and electronic sounds has a unique character.
If this is your first time hearing Antoin Gibson, she is an artist worth keeping an eye on. I’ve had her on my favorites list for more than a year and this EP gives me another reason to keep following her work.
