I’ve been enjoying Richard Tyler Epperson’s music for quite some time now, especially the releases he shared last year, some of which I had the pleasure of reviewing on CTTV. I’ve always liked his sound and the quality of his work, so seeing his name pop up again with a new single was a welcome surprise. “One Thought Away” is another release that reminds me why I’ve been keeping an eye on this artist.
The track opens with piano and exposed vocals before taking a different direction with a rhythmic and almost conversational rap delivery. From there, the arrangement gradually grows into something much heavier, bringing together distorted guitars, synths and drums. I enjoyed how the song moves between these different sections, giving it so much of character without losing its direction. The instrumentation is good and the production and mixing do an excellent job of bringing everything together.
Richard’s vocal performance deserves some credit here. His delivery is powerful and the melodies are strong and memorable. I also loved the lyrics and the conviction behind his words. He means what he’s singing. The song explores the struggle of trying to keep your thoughts under control when everything inside starts getting louder.
This is a strong single with excellent musical work behind it. I’ve enjoyed most of Richard’s previous releases, and this one gives me another good reason to keep following his journey. If you haven’t discovered his music yet, he’s definitely an artist worth watching. Make sure to follow him online!
