Losem just landed on my radar with the new single “Hangnail”, and I’m glad it did. I was taken by the energy here and by the quality of the music. Kels Taylor leads the song with a strong performance while the full-band sound gives the writing so much space to hit hard.
“Hangnail” deals with the habit of getting in your own way and making things harder for yourself. It’s a familiar struggle, but the lyrics approach it with an original touch rather than spelling everything out. The writing and melodies work well together. The melody is memorable and the chorus is the kind that can stay in your head after one listen. I love how the arrangement keeps giving you little moments to catch, from the guitars to the other instrumental parts supporting the song.
The production is polished, with a full sound and good small details in the instrumentation. Taylor’s delivery gives the track its raw edge, but the songwriting is just as important to why it works. The energy of this song is amazing and the chorus gives it a hook that makes me want to hear it again. This is a great introduction to Losem for me.
