Finding the right opening can be difficult. Sometimes an album is better heard than explained, and Jack Maria’s new release “Blank” is a good example. Still, leaving you with nothing but a link would not make much of a review, so let me say a little about the artist behind it. Maria has clearly put a lot of care and imagination into shaping this record and that comes through in the sound.
The album moves through dreamy passages and darker, uneasy moments. The atmosphere pulled me in, especially when the instruments and electronic textures sit together in ways I did not quite expect. The production choices are smart and definitely a big part of the experience. Edited instruments and electronic sounds blend without making the album lose its unique character. I loved how the whole thing was put together. It has been a while since an electronic release gave me this much pleasure to listen to.
There is also a heavier side to the record. Its themes touch on hopelessness, numbness and difficult experiences, so the darker atmosphere is not there just for decoration. Maria’s music is creative and the care behind these choices is impressive. My favorite track here was “Today is The Most Perfect Day”.
I could keep picking apart the sounds, but honestly, I think Blank is best experienced by listening to it yourself. I enjoyed this album a lot, and that dreamy and haunting atmosphere stayed with me after it ended. I’ll leave you to enjoy it, and I’ll see you with another review.
