Tom Minor has a voice that’s hard to resist, so I’m happy his new single “What a Little Moonlight Could Do” is back on my radar. It’s been a while since I heard from him, maybe last March, and this is, I think, my tenth review of his music. I’m still enjoying every release and I’m not surprised.
Tom’s writing and delivery are smooth and easy to listen to and I love the melodies here. The song has a vintage rock sound with an upbeat drive that’s fun to replay, even though the story hints at darker trouble. The moonlight exposes things that can’t be unseen, while leaving room to wonder whether someone can begin again after taking a wrong turn. I like that contrast here. The music keeps moving, but the subject has a harder edge.
The production and mixing are excellent with so much happening in the arrangement without making it feel or sound crowded. The drums caught my ear from the first seconds. I enjoyed the sound design, the classic rock touches and the raw energy. It keeps the direct and guitar-led character I enjoy in Tom’s music. The lyrics are well written and mesh perfectly with the vocal melodies. So it’s more than just a catchy tune.
I had a great time replaying this one. Tom has a way of surprising me while keeping the qualities that made me a fan. I’m happy to have a new song from him, and I’ll definitely keep following his music. I’m a big fan of his work, and this single reminds me why.
