50mething has been one of the best discoveries on Cheers To The Vikings this year and this is our sixth review of his music. I’ve enjoyed his sound and voice. Now he’s back with a new single, “Obsession” and it’s another lovely listen.
The song is about his relationship with music and the need to keep earbuds close for comfort when life gets difficult. I like that idea because music can be more than background noise. Sometimes it helps you sort through a day or gives you a little comfort. There’s so much to enjoy in the arrangement. The instrumentation has nice variety and detail and I really liked the sound design. The bass line carries the song and the guitar adds a great touch in the chorus. The brass section near the end is a nice touch and gives the track a satisfying finish.
50mething’s singing is the main reason why this works for me. His delivery is gentle and catchy and the melodies and chorus stay with you. The lyrics are lovely and his writing is easy to listen to without dressing things up in complicated ideas. The Pop and R&B sides fit together in a way I really like. The production is good as always, with the mixing and mastering handled beautifully. I respect the care and passion he puts into his music. I could happily keep writing about 50mething. He’s the kind of artist I want to hear every day, and I’m happy I’ve found him.
