Have you heard 2nd Magpie Project yet? I hadn’t come across this British indie group before “Divine Intervention” their new single, but it was like meeting an old favourite. They won me over immediately and I can see myself spending more time with their music. I felt like I’ve been listening to their music for years.
There’s a lot of emotion here but what is good is that the song never becomes hard to listen to. It draws you in with its hazy guitar sound and catchy melodies that will definitely get stuck in your head for days. Underneath that calm surface, the song deals with a love that has ended and the grief left behind. That gives the song so much weight.
I really loved Chris Barnham’s writing and the way he delivers these lines. His voice has a richness I wanted to hear again, so I found myself replaying the track over and over without feeling bored. There’s so much passion in his performance. The band behind him brings even more of that energy with good layered guitars, synths and low bass. The instrumentation is rich, full of great moments and well put together. The production is professional and the mixing is excellent, with really good sound design.
For a first listen, this track made an immediate connection with me and made me a fan of this band. It’s soothing in places, deeply emotional underneath and captivating without being difficult to get into. I’m super happy this song introduced me to 2nd Magpie Project. I’ll be keeping an ear out for what Chris and the band do next.
