Bermuda based project Midgriefs just landed on my radar with “Field of Empty Light”, a new album that pulled me into its haunting and dark atmosphere pretty quickly. There is something unique about the way this record stays in that darker space without losing its grip on the songs.
The instrumentation is a big part of why I kept listening. The guitars and drums give the album so much to dig into, and I really enjoyed those moments when the instruments take over and let the music speak. His vocals have a haunting quality and adding another layer to the darker sound around them. Midgriefs put a lot of care and passion into the music and I think that comes through without needing to say too much.
The album deals with alienation, death, and looking for hope when that light is hard to find. I like that idea because the album doesn’t make the search for hope sound simple. It sits with the darker side of things and lets the listener spend some time there.
I honestly couldn’t choose a favorite track here. The album works better for me as a complete experience, and I loved every second. Midgriefs landed on my radar at the perfect time. This is the kind of album that makes me want to go back and hear it again and I’ll be watching to see where this project goes next.
