FAKE SUEDE led by songwriter and vocalist Jeffrey James, caught my attention with his new single “Speak Up”. It’s a song that brings smooth alt-R&B together with a classic soul touch. Jeffrey has a rich voice, but it is his writing and delivery that pulled me in. His style is catchy, the melodies sit nicely and there is an easy flow to the performance.
I really liked the production here. There are some great ideas in the arrangement but the song keeps its direction. The chorus is one of my favorite parts here and the sound design is impressive and gives the track a nice shape. I also liked how the melodies work with the groove and lyrics. You can hear the care behind the music.
“Speak Up” is about that awkward point in a situationship when two people finally need to say where things are going. That subject fits the relaxed but slightly restless mood, giving the lyrics something clear to work with. The artist mixes modern indie R&B with touches of older soul. He carries that style very well. The chorus is amazing and you may find yourself singing it by the next morning.
I loved this one a lot. Jeffrey has a lot going for him, from his writing to the way he delivers these songs and I would love to hear his next releases. He is an artist I will be keeping on my radar, for sure. I mean that sincerely.
