Every time I read the title “Meet Me In The City” I can’t help but smile. My wife and I have spent so many evenings listening to Junior Kimbrough and this song has always been one of our favorites. He’s a true blues legend, so covering one of his songs is never an easy thing to do.
Well, Alastair Gordon pulled it off and I’m saying that as someone who loves Junior Kimbrough’s voice and music. He treated the original with respect while still making it a little bit his own. The tone is exactly where it should be and the whole recording sounds clean without taking away the soul of the song.
The instrumentation is perfect and every part works together in a great way. The melodies are catchy and the production and mixing are professional and give the cover plenty of room to breathe. I also loved the harmonies. Alastair’s performance kept me interested from start to finish and you can tell he really understands the spirit of the original while bringing his musical touch into it.
I’ve heard plenty of covers over the years, but only a few have made me want to play them again instead of going back to the original. This is one of them. It’s an uplifting take on a classic that never loses its blues heart. I’ll definitely be adding this one to my daily playlist. I already know it’s going to sound even better during a drive and I have a feeling my next car ride is going to be a joyful one.
