tcr! – On Vancouver Island

I just discovered this amazing artist tcr!. He has one of those sounds that clicks pretty fast once the song starts. “On Vancouver Island” opens with this worn in acoustic guitar that keeps its presence the whole track forward and the lofi production gives it a rough edge that fits the writing perfectly. Nothing here sounds cleaned up too much and that’s probably why I liked it.

The vocals are gritty but in a way that matches the mood of the song. You can tell he means every line. The lyrics dig into the messiness of a toxic relationship without hiding behind vague writing. Some lines hit hard because they’re so direct. By the second listen, I already found myself singing along with him.

I really liked how the track keeps things simple. It doesn’t spend time trying to sound huge or crowded. The guitar, steady rhythm and raw delivery already do enough. There’s a loose DIY charm to the whole thing that made me want to replay it again and again.

I’ve really enjoyed this artist’s style and this single made me even more excited about what he does next. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for future releases from tcr!.
