Wytold & Tolk – Voltage

This amazing duo Wytold & Tolk just landed on my radar with their new release “Voltage”. This album kept pulling me back in track after track. It’s a long listen with 13 tracks, but I never caught myself checking how much time was left. Every few tracks they shift the mood or bring in another instrument choice that changes the whole direction for a minute.

I really liked how much attention they gave to the music itself. The vocals are there but the instruments carry most of the weight. Especially the cello and guitar parts. You can hear the duo enjoying the process. And they’re not trying to make everything sound perfect or overly polished. Some moments drift into electronic territory. And then there’s blues guitar or percussion pushing things somewhere else. It kept the album moving without sounding messy which is not easy to target.

“Grown Apart” is my favorite one here because of how straightforward it was emotionally. I loved “Song 5” too. It has this late-night energy that worked really well with the production. I also liked how melodic the whole album felt even during its heavier or more experimental sections. The sound design across the record deserves credit too.

Right now, this release is like one of those albums I’ll keep around for a long while. This duo cares about building their own style and sound desing and I’m glad I ran into this project when I did.
