If you’re after something dark, driven by a deep sound, strong vocals and great playing, Def Nettle’s new single “Trauma Removal Machine” is well worth your time. The Irish band brings post-punk grit and a clear new wave edge to the track with confidence.
The guitars and drums caught my attention straight away. They give the track its weight and movement without crowding everything else. The melodies are a big part of why I enjoyed it too. They will stay with you and the atmosphere gives the song a dark character. Glen Brady handles the lead vocal with a smooth and confident delivery and Lisa Doyle adds another voice to the mix, giving the performance a different angle and a unique touch.
There is so much of energy here, but the band also knows when to let the arrangement do its work. The production and mixing are very good, keeping the instruments clear while allowing the track to hold onto its depth. The writing deserves credit as well. Beneath the attitude, the song touches on music as a way of working through difficult experiences, and finding some relief in the process. It is an idea that fits the music without turning the track into a lecture.
You can hear the passion behind what Def Nettle are doing and that commitment comes through in the playing. I loved the melodies, the atmosphere and the way the whole band moves together. “Trauma Removal Machine” is a strong single and one I’ll be happy to spend more time with.
