John Smyths – Memories and Empty Bottles

John Smyths is an artist I keep listening to because his music carries positive energy without asking too much of the listener. His releases are easy to put on at any time of day. You might find me dancing to “I’m Dutch” at 7 in the morning, then settling down with “My Brother, My Friend” later in the evening. That mix makes “Memories and Empty Bottles” such an enjoyable album. There is a little bit of everything here, my friend.

The title “My Brother, My Friend” brought to mind the song of the same name by American blues-rock artist Damon Fowler. They are different songs, but John has nailed his own take on that title. Haha.

I have always liked John’s voice and his songwriting is a big reason I follow his work. He delivers the songs in a way that suits the material, including personal stories about family and his life. The melodies caught my attention in the album and the arrangements give his vocals so much to work with without crowding them. The musicianship is strong and the production sounds carefully handled, showing real skill.

I have only mentioned two tracks, but that is not the full story of this record. I enjoyed the album as a whole and it is the kind of release I can put on in different moods and still find something to enjoy. John Smyths keeps making music I want to hear and I am happy I gave this one my time.
