Romattic is a band I discovered a couple of weeks ago with their new single “Candy Smoking”. It is the kind of rock song that reminds me why a good guitar-driven track can stay in my head long after it ends. This Norwegian project understands rock energy and there is something about this song that makes me want to hear it again and again. Definitely one of the best tracks I’ve heard this year.
The band brings back the 80s-90s rock spirit I used to hear around 1998. I caught it in the guitars, bass and drums, and the arrangement never loses that edge. The guitar solo is a favorite for me. It gives the song a very good push. The vocals are rich with a strong delivery, memorable melodies and catchy lyrics that are easy to get stuck with.
There is also more going on with the story than the rock sound might suggest. The track looks at modern romance from a different angle. It follows someone who knows his relationship is one-sided, while friends and family keep warning him that he is being used. Still, he cannot let go because he is scared of losing the relationship and the social acceptance that comes with having one. That idea gives the song a darker side beneath the energy.
Romattic mixes older rock influences with its alt-pop direction and I enjoyed that combination here. This is an amazing rock song with enough personality to keep me coming back. I loved the energy, the instruments and those vocals and I can see myself keeping the song on repeat.
