My father was a big fan of Arabic music, especially music built around the oud, so I grew up hearing that sound around the house. I still listen to it from time to time, which is why finding a few albums by Syrian artist Rihab Azar caught my attention. Now based in London, Rihab has impressed me with her new album, “Dandelion”.
This is an instrumental album, but it never feels empty. Rihab brings the oud into the center while violin, cello and percussion add different shades around it. I liked how she gives each instrument room to speak instead of filling every moment with sound. These pieces move quietly, and listening through the whole album from start to finish does feel like taking a journey. You need to give it that time and let the tunes unfold.
Rihab’s playing is another big part of the experience. There is real skill in the way she handles the oud, but I also hear a strong connection to her roots. She takes that classic sound and gives it her unique direction without losing what makes it special to me. The violin and cello add another atmosphere and together they make the arrangements easy to get lost in.
I can hear how much care and passion went into this album. I loved the sound, the roots behind it and the way Rihab plays with such purpose. I believe in her as an artist and I would love to hear more from her.
