Sungaze – I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights

One of the things I really love about blogging is discovering amazing new bands every day and Sungaze has easily become one of my favorite discoveries in recent months. Their new album, “I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights”, stayed on my speakers for the last ten days and I honestly enjoyed every minute of it. Most of the time, when I listen to a full album, my attention starts to drift somewhere in the middle. That never happened here. I found myself staying locked in, paying attention to small production choices and little details that kept appearing throughout the record.

Sungaze have put together an album that sounds polished without losing its character. The guitars carry a lot of the weight and create a strong foundation for songs that look back at the past while still pushing forward. There are themes of change, loss, growing up and finding the courage to move ahead and the band handles those ideas in an honest way.

The vocals kept pulling me back in from track to track and the chemistry between this band’s members is a big part of why these songs work so well. The instrumentation is impressive, the mix is great and the sound design helps give the album its identity. The louder moments hit with purpose and the production choices are one of the biggest strengths of the entire release. I came away from this album impressed. Sungaze is a band I will keep following and this is one of those records I know I’ll be revisiting again.
