Hey Look Listen – Dystopian Days

I just discovered this amazing artist Hey Look Listen and her new album “Dystopian Days”. I played this record yesterday when my kids were asleep. The lights were off and didn’t skip a single track which almost never happens for me anymore. Something about how she builds these songs kept pulling me forward even when things got loud or messy.

It’s a 9-track album, but it covers a lot of ground without feeling scattered. The guitars hit hard in moments and then drift into something more distant the next minute. There’s a kind of push and pull going on the whole time. You can hear the indie and shoegaze roots, but it leans rougher, almost restless. Her sound is not polished in a shiny way – more like it’s been lived in. It’s raw and sounds just real.

I really like how personal it all comes across. You can tell these songs came from somewhere real. She doesn’t hide behind big metaphors or overcomplicate things. It’s direct, sometimes uncomfortable, but it works and I like it. I kept thinking about how well she turns heavy thoughts into something you can actually sit with.

The sound design deserves a mention here. Little details pop up when you’re not expecting them. Background textures and guitar layers that don’t just sit there. The instrumentation has character and the mixing lets everything breathe without losing that special edge. It’s carefully built.

By the end of this record, I realized I didn’t just like a few songs – I liked her whole sound. The atmosphere she creates is hard to shake once you’re in it. I’m pretty sure Hey Look Listen just earned a long-term spot on my favorites list. This is one I’ll come back to.
