Joey P. is a young singer-songwriter and guitar player from Chicago. He is back again with a new EP “DYING TO LIVE”. This has been sitting in my rotation for a bit now and it keeps pulling me back in different ways.
The first thing that always hits me is his voice. There’s a confidence in how he delivers lines. It’s steady, like he knows exactly where he fits on each beat. Even when the production shifts around him, he doesn’t lose control. That kind of consistency is rare, especially in a project that blends styles this much.
And yeah, the mix of genres is a big part of why this works. There’s R&B in there, some pop edges, a bit of indie texture and it all mixes in a way that shouldn’t be this smooth – but it is.
The production is polished and there are small ideas tucked into the background. Same with the mixing. Everything sits where it should. What stuck with me more is the writing. He keeps it honest. There’s a directness to his lyrics that makes them easier to connect with. You can tell he means what he’s saying and that carries through in how he performs it.
I’ve written about Joey P. before and I keep coming back for a reason. He’s got his own style and he knows how to stay in it while still trying new ideas. At this point, he’s easily one of my favorite artists in this space right now.
