Robert Peterson and The Crusade – Change Coming On

Robert Peterson and The Crusade just landed on my radar this month with a new record titled “Change Coming On”. There’s a point about halfway through this album where I caught myself turning the volume up without thinking. Not for a big moment, not for a chorus. Just because the groove felt too good to leave in the background. That kind of says everything.

This band doesn’t overcomplicate things. They lean into guitars that actually move, basslines you can follow and drums that feel like someone is really hitting them with intent. It’s tight, but not stiff. You can hear a band playing together, not pieces stitched in later.

A track like “Sometime” stuck with me for a different reason. There’s this tone that almost tricks you at first. I thought it was keys, but it blends in a way that keeps the song a bit off-center in a good way. It doesn’t break the flow, just adds a small twist that keeps your ears awake.

Robert’s voice carries the record in a great way. He has a powerful and rich voice and it suits the sound of this band. His delivery is confident and smooth. I also kept noticing how clean everything sounds. The mix gives each part room, especially the rhythm section. Which makes repeat listens easy. You start picking up little things. A guitar fill here, a drum accent there.

What I like most is how direct the whole album feels. No filler, no wandering. Just solid songs, played well, with a clear sense of what they want to be. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to keep going back to it this much. But I did. And I probably will again.
