Kevin Driscoll – Put It Behind Me

Kevin Driscoll just released “Put It Behind Me” and it’s one of those songs that doesn’t try to impress you it just sits there with you for a while. Kevin is one of my favorite indie artists and his music always gets a place on my blog.

It opens with a soft acoustic guitar and it carries the whole record. There’s a slightly eerie tone in the background that gives it weight, like something unresolved hanging in the air. It’s simple, but it works. The space in the arrangement actually helps the feeling land better.

His voice is the center of everything. There’s a heaviness in the way he delivers each line, like he’s holding something back but not quite managing to. At a few points, it almost sounds like he might crack and that’s what pulled me in. It doesn’t feel performed but it feels lived-in. It’s honest and emotional. Very emotional.

The lyrics are about the same feeling. They deal with letting go, but not in a clean or confident way. It’s more like dragging your feet through something you know you have to do. That stuck with me more than anything. There’s no big moment where it all lifts. Just a quiet kind of acceptance. I also liked how the track builds slightly as it goes. There are some added layers later on, but they never take over. Everything stays grounded around that guitar and vocal which keeps it simple and personal.

This is the kind of song I’d put on repeat without thinking too much about it. Not because it’s catchy, but because it sits in a mood that’s hard to find when it’s done right. I’ll be honest, I’m already planning to come back to this one. Kevin Driscoll is definitely on my radar now and if this is the direction he’s heading, I want to hear what comes next.
