I put this on late at night without thinking much and it kind of stopped me in place. I just discovered this masterpiece “What We Lost II” by Hanan Townshend and it doesn’t rush into anything. It starts with these haunting strings that sound like they’re coming from another world. Then the piano slips in at just the right moment. not dramatic, just… right. That timing stuck with me more than anything.
There are no vocals here, but it doesn’t feel empty. The melody carries everything. It moves slowly, giving each note space to sit before the next one arrives. I caught myself replaying some parts because they lingered in a way that’s hard to explain.
The sound is warm overall, but there’s also something slightly heavy underneath it. Not overwhelming, just enough to make you pause. The strings and piano work together without stepping on each other and the production keeps it all clear and balanced.
I really loved Hanan’s musical style and I like how he trusts the listener to stay with him. He doesn’t try to fill every second. He lets the piece unfold at its own pace and if you’re in the right headspace, it really lands.
This piece came at a strange but fitting time. I didn’t expect much going in, but by the end, I just let it play again. I don’t say this often with instrumental tracks, but this one stayed with me after it ended. I’ll probably keep it in rotation for a while. especially on nights when I don’t want too much noise.
