I didn’t plan to sit with this one as long as I did, but here we are. I just discovered this talented artist 50mething and his new single “Drag Me by the Hair” kept pulling me back in. I played it once, then again later that night, then randomly the next day while doing something else and somehow it stuck.
I really love this artist’s sound and the way he delivers the vocals. They’re smooth but not in a showy way. I caught myself focusing on the lyrics and melodies more than anything else.
The production is where things started opening up for me. It’s not flat or one-note. There’s movement in it. Small shifts that keep the track from sitting still too long. You can tell time was spent getting the mix right because everything sits where it should. I didn’t have to fight to hear anything which honestly made it easier to just enjoy the song instead of picking it apart.
I really like how the song carries a great weight without turning heavy to listen to. You can feel there’s something behind it, something real, but it doesn’t hit you over the head with it. I respect that. It trusts the listener a bit.
I replayed the hook a few times, not even thinking about it, just letting it run back. That’s usually my sign. I won’t lie, I’m curious now. There’s a sense that this is just one piece of a bigger catalog, and I want to hear where else he goes with this sound. So for me, this one stayed and this artist is going to my favorite list.
