Anna Weatherup – Delusional

Anna Weatherup just landed on my radar with her album “Delusional”. For me it came out of nowhere in the best way. I hadn’t been following her work before this, so pressing play was like walking into something new without any expectations. A few songs in. I realized I’d probably be playing the whole record more than once.

The first thing that caught me was the sound of the band behind her. The production is solid and leaves room for the instruments to show some personality. Guitars carry a lot of the weight across the album. Sometimes pushing forward with real rock drive and other times sitting back and letting the melody lead. There are a few unique moments in the instrumentation that give the songs a slightly different color. It keeps the record moving.

Anna’s voice is the center of everything. She sings with strength and control and she knows when to lean into a line and when to hold back a little. On the bigger sections of the songs. She really goes for it and the band rises with her. That push between the vocals and the instruments gives the album a lot of life.

I really loved the energy running through the whole record. The songwriting is great. Several choruses stayed in my head long after the album finished. I caught myself replaying parts just to hear those hooks again. The lyrics are direct and honest.

After spending time with this album. I can honestly say Anna Weatherup is now on my radar. This is a strong record with memorable songs and a voice that’s hard to ignore. I’ll definitely be watching for whatever she releases next.
