Banquet Darling – The Getaway

I first played “The Getaway” by Banquet Darling in the car after a late grocery run, thinking it would just be background sound for the drive home. Instead I sat in the parking lot for another minute after the engine was off because the chorus kicked in and I didn’t want to cut it off mid-hook.

It’s got that shiny disco-pop groove, but the guitars give it a bit of grit, like it’s wearing sneakers with a suit. The beat keeps nudging you forward. not aggressively but just enough that your foot starts tapping before you notice. It was built for motion, driving, walking fast, cleaning the room at 11 pm, whatever.

His voice is a big part of why it works. It’s clear and easy to latch onto with a playful edge that makes the whole thing relaxed instead of overly calculated. At one point I realized I was quietly singing along on the second chorus which almost never happens on a first listen.

Nothing about the track sounds heavy. It’s bright, catchy and just a little mischievous. It knows exactly what mood it wants to create and sticks to it. I wouldn’t call it life-altering, but honestly, not every song needs to be. This one just put me in a better mood for three minutes and lately that is like more than enough.
