Andy Smythe – Life of a Man

I put on “Life of a Man” by Andy Smythe with a cup of coffee beside me, not really knowing what to expect and by the second verse I was already nodding along. There’s a bluesy thread running through the whole track that is warm and a little worn-in. Like an old jacket you keep by the door. The guitar lines have that classic touch and the trumpet slips in at just the right moments. It is all carefully put together.

Andy’s style has always leaned toward thoughtful songwriting and you can hear that again here. He writes about real-life worries. rent, jobs, figuring out who you’re meant to be and he doesn’t dress it up too much. It’s direct. The message about this new generation trying to find its place hit me, especially because it’s not just their struggle. It’s ours too. Different years, same pressure.

His voice is always rich and easy to sit with. There’s a blues harp tucked into the mix that adds a bit of grit and the rhythm keeps everything moving. I also have to say, the production sounds solid and balanced. Every part has room.

Andy Smythe is one of my favorite artists and his songs stay with me after they end. He’s a talented songwriter and this song is both timely and familiar. I’ve always enjoyed writing about his music and this one is no different. It left me thinking about my own path for a while after it faded out and that’s the kind of song I keep coming back to.
