Solnedgang’s EP “Valkyrie” is definitely a captivating journey through Norse mythology, with immersive melodies and atmospheric landscapes. Although based in London, Solnedgang was born in Norway and blends post-rock, post-metal, black metal, and progressive rock/metal influences into her music which create a unique sonic experience.
Right from the start of the EP “Valkyrie”, it grabs you by the ears with its polished production and energetic vibe that intertwines catchy melodies with interesting arrangements. In each track on this record we are taken to different otherworldly places where gods reside alongside spirits or even mythological creatures themselves.
“Folkvangr” sees us being guided through Freya’s domain by Valkyries on what can only be described as an emotional pilgrimage; “Draugr” brings us face-to-face with death (or rather undeath) showing both sides of aggression/peacefulness within oneself when confronted by such fear.
“Lament” deals heavily with mourning/reminiscing over loved ones who have passed away etc., thus weaving lots sad tunes together into one hopeful sob story; finally “Niflhel” ends everything off nicely painting picture full dense fog where no living soul might ever want to find themselves trapped forever.
To sum up everything about this EP I would say that it really does show how talented of a musician Solnedgang is but more importantly than anything else she also proves herself here as being good at telling stories since all we get throughout these verses are myths from olden times which still manage somehow not fade away even after centuries gone by!
