ABOUT THE ARTIST:
You could call her work fairytale music, or dream like landscapes, but fairy tales contain moments of enlightenment as well as darkness. The 5 singles that Elenne May will release over the coming year, show these cycles of life. They tell of the journey, the processes in life, and celebrate the full meaning of being human in the greater whole.
Elenne was born in Holland in 1988, but grew up in Australia. It was here that her longing to wander was discovered and that the greatness of the universe was whispered to her. It is not without reason that the desert is a powerful metaphor that she falls back. Back in the Netherlands she started writing her own songs from the moment she exchanged her cello for an old keyboard at the age of 12 and sat in her room to write. She studied vocals at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, but grew as a singer-songwriter, visual artist, producer and personally as a mother.
Since 2011, Elenne May has released three albums. Her debut, the EP ‘Lilies And Blue Veined Hands’ in 2011. The song ‘Like a Lily Among Thorns’ in particular stood out and became a cult hit. In the same year, Elenne reached the quarterfinals in two of Holland’s prestigieus pop awards (de Grote Prijs van Nederland and de Amsterdamse Popprijs). This should be called a remarkable achievement, as her music is not aimed at the masses.
In November 2012, Elenne’s first album ‘Misleadingly Soft’ was released. The record took the 2nd place of most listened to albums on the Dutch 3voor12 charts. With performances on national radio stations and theaters, ‘Misleadingly Soft’ was a successful introduction to her magical and visual world.
A second album followed in 2016, first released on 3 online EPs, ‘Veggie Patch In The Desert’ was a triptych album. Working with producer Akim Moiseenkov, Elenne May sought and found the extremely intimate atmospheres, which strongly characterises “Veggie Patch”, as it was recorded in living rooms and church buildings.
In March of 2020, as the band was ready to kick off a musical theater tour, the tour had to be canceled as many shows did at that time. Elenne May was forced to find new ways to implement and share her music. Velvet Beings, the EP was recorded, each one of the 5 singles to be accompanied by a video clip, depicting and announcing the music theater ‘Velvet Beings’ that will premiere this year.
Producer Tessa Rose Jackson worked with Elenne may to record the songs that are thematically a sequel to the album ‘Veggie Patch In The Desert’. With theatrical elements, spoken word and atmospheric numbers, the musical theater ‘Velvet Beings’ reflects both greatness and humanity.
The new music can be recognized as Elenne May. And although she can certainly be mentioned in the same breath in terms of atmosphere as Kate Bush, Sophie Hunger or Joanna Newsom, her sound is completely unique. Within that framework, she has found her limits and subsequently pushed them.
“On the vibrations of this sound, I was able to find the freedom to write about the difficult things, themes like social structures and the high standards we portray. The melodies of Velvet Beings make room for people in their truth. I hope they may be a reminder of the value of connection between people, as the expectations and fastness of life sometimes make us forget.”
