ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Korean–American singer, songwriter, and producer, Mindy, is an electronic dance music artist that draws from her classical music training in Orange County, CA and her teenage visits to house music clubs in Seoul, Korea.
She has built a reputation for kinetic and unexpected performance art with her LA-based indie rock band, Wam Dingis, and luminous vocals for electronic rock band Night Dreamer. Her voice has been compared to the likes of Santigold, Sia, and Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead.
Her start in music production began when she worked as an assistant to mentor and friend Lior Goldenberg, producer of Allen Stone and recording engineer for Alanis Morissette, Andrew WK, and Ziggy Marley. She began recording with friends around LA over early Tokimonsta beats with friend and rapper Surrilla from the Oddibles. During that time she recorded vocals for hip hop tracks including one with Dumbfounded. She later joined Wam Dingis with Orange County School of the Arts friend, Jordan Avila, after meeting in numerous oil painting classes. With Wam Dingis, she played shows across LA with cherry pies, wigs, and handsewn nun costumes, head banging to songs about feminism, religiosity, and capitalism. In Night Dreamer, Mindy helped build an ominous, dreamy sound, songwriting and co-producing with bandmate Jeff Schroeder, guitarist for the Smashing Pumpkins. Together they performed across North America and Asia, opening for the band Peter Hook and the Light and YB.
Her solo release is the culmination of years of avant-garde performance exploration, installation art, and electronic dance production. After reuniting with longtime friend Tristan Calder, whom she frequently visited Low End Theory shows in LA with, the two quickly built out bass synth heavy, dark electronic dance music together. While playing synth for Goon, she met shoe gaze band Draag and eventually co-produced the upcoming single, “Nervous Shudders.”
Mindy said her songs are about: “transcending the pain and trauma of the past, where life makes zero sense. Music’s an easy way you can see all the complicated shades of grey we sit in.” She cites Bjork, Sia, Erykah Badu, Alison Wonderland, Nujabes, Philip Glass, Blonde Redhead, Shiny Toy Guns, and Thome Yorke as some of her influences.
