Fritz Michel’s vocal performance is incredibly catchy and there is a great level of songwriting that shines up through this record. The vocal melodies are beautiful and mesh with the lyrics perfectly. The guitars and drums are so enjoyable and the production is polished and sounds very very professional. “Watching clouds flow across a late afternoon sky inspired the music and lyrics for DARKER NOW. I wanted to write an intimate vignette set to a laid-back groove.The song unfolds over six short verses, split by an instrumental passage, taking structural cues from traditional English ballads. Using a different chord progression, the song then resolves during an outro (starting at 2:40) and revisits the story’s details like a reflection on memory. “Darker Now” was produced by guitarist Tosh Sheridan and features Eric Halvorson on drums.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Hailing from New York City, French-born artist Fritz Michel writes indie rock and roots rock songs with melodic grooves steeped in influences ranging from REM, Jerry Garcia, and Stanley Turrentine to Dire Straits, Belle & Sebastian and Father John Misty. With a story-telling voice reminiscent of Lou Reed, Fritz’s songs explore human moments and shifts in perception. He plays bass in electric jazz combo Blue Vibes and in Riverdale (Bronx) rock band Betty and Veronica. Drawing from a bi-coastal career as both actor/director, Fritz says, “I try to write songs that I’d want to hear so I start from the audience perspective. The magic of music lies in that deeply felt way music connect our shared stories and emotions with one another.
