Marie Naffah has released her brand new single ‘California’, a taste of her forthcoming debut EP out later this year. The first few seconds of this song will be enough to have you hooked. It’s honestly such a beautiful masterpiece that shows off the charm of Marie’s voice and shows how talented she is when it comes to songwriting. The song comes with an amazing music video that definitely will give you a better experience while you are listening. We always get stuck on Marie’s beautiful singing, she has one of the purest voices we have ever heard and her performance is always catchy and professional. We have enjoyed listening to this song until the last second and we really loved how the lyrics and melodies mesh together perfectly. This song was a wonderful and unique experience for our team!
ABOUT THE ARTIST SAYS ABOUT THIS SONG:
“Quite simply, ‘California’ is a love letter to a place. It’s meant to capture the infatuation of being somewhere that is not your home. Where the mundane becomes marvellous and every detail is a souvenir.
“I wrote it after coming back to London – the verses are just lines lifted from my diary pages. It all happened – the smell of the dock, the drives to nowhere, the early sun rises, the coffee from big cups… We were staying on a houseboat on the dock where Otis Redding was said to have written ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’.
“When it came to the chorus, I imagined all the places in the world as different people attending a pageant or a ball of some sort. Paris and London were in short black dresses looking chic at the bar but dare not dance, Italy was ordering the best food and wine to the table but California, she was dancing with her eyes closed in a loose white dress, right in the middle with no care in the world.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
London based singer/songwriter Marie Naffah joins the dots between Florence and The Machine and Aretha Franklin, via insightful wordplay inspired by musical poets such as Leonard Cohen and Alex Turner, to create a sound and groove that is entirely her own: captivating lyricism wrapped in a soaring delivery that manages to straddle the line between timeless and contemporary.
Marie was named MTV’s Unsigned Artist of the Year before releasing a song. Now two singles in, she has done more than most: from delivering her own TED Talk and touring the US to scoring a movie for the BFI Female Film Festival. Her recent string of sold out London shows included iconic venues such as Omeara, The Lexington, Camden Assembly and Ronnie Scott’s.
In 2019 Marie took a road trip across the US. The journey proved pivotal in her development as an artist, inspiring her to create a new batch of songs that sit “halfway between London and Americana…new contemporary music with a brush of soul”. The resulting material is an EP recorded with Simon Byrt (Pixx, Charlotte OC, Babeheaven) and Neil Comber on mixing (Florence and the Machine, Glass Animals, Charlie XCX).
