ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Jhyve’s been a hidden gem in Toronto’s R&B scene as far back at 2011, but by 2018, he’d landed several songs on Spotify’s Canada Viral Top 50 playlist, opened for international acts like Jessie Reyez, and received a JUNO Award nomination for his last EP, Conversations.
Born Jamaal Desmond Bowry in Scarborough, Ontario to Kittitian parents, Jhyve was no stranger to music in his household. His father would often DJ for local West Indian community events, while his mother sang in the church choir. All through his upbringing, there was never a moment without music or musical influences.
By taking the soulful melodies of classic R&B anthems, the edge and raw energy of classic rock, and the textures of 80s and 90s pop music, Jhyve has a sound that’s hard to miss. Add to that his personal, sharp lyrics and a charming, yet commanding presence; and Jhyve manages to form a style that’s inspired by many, comparable to few, and unique to one.
