The first record of Ramona and the Holy Smokes, the EP “Til It’s Over” is a fun and genuine journey into country music with a contemporary touch. The EP was recorded at Spacebomb Studio in Richmond and it perfectly captures the spirit of classic honky-tonk while telling very intimate stories. Featuring just three tracks, it is enough to make a listener remember its captivating melodies and beautiful lyrics.
The opening track “I Want You to Be My Man” is a perfect example of train beats with a bouncy tempo that sets the tone for the entire record. “Dear Avery” is a Neil Young-inspired ballad that slows things down and provides some deep thinking through the lyrics. The song that is most memorable is “I Love Smoking” and it is one of the best examples of Ramona Martinez’s ability to weave deeply personal themes into universal stories.
Martinez’s voice is just amazing, it is deep, powerful and captivating. The instrumentation throughout the EP is excellent, with each instrument supporting her voice and the mood of the songs. I loved every second of this EP. It’s original, easy to enjoy and brimming with charm. If this EP is any indication, Ramona and the Holy Smokes are poised for a great future in country music. I am looking forward to the next one!
