Alexandra John’s newest single, “Lonely Night,” is a compelling exploration of the duality of escape and introspection, set against a backdrop of infectious Indie Electro Pop. Comprising a unique brother and sister duo with a musical connection as profound as their birth bond, Alexandra John, formerly known by their individual middle names, has crafted a track that resonates with listeners on both a personal and universal level.
The song’s narrative delves into the human experience of seeking refuge from life’s discomforts and challenges, only to realize that the escape is transient. The lyrics paint a poignant picture of those nights when the allure of distraction and excitement promises an everlasting sanctuary. However, as the revelry fades and the night gives way to the dawn, the weight of unresolved issues and internal struggles remains. “Lonely Night” captures this paradox, gently reminding us that time marches forward and our battles accompany us even as the party lights dim.
The accompanying music video serves as a visual complement to the song’s emotional arc. With a keen desire to encapsulate the rollercoaster of emotions experienced during a night out, Alexandra John employs a relatable scenario. The video follows the siblings on a night of exploration, from moments of carefree joy to the vulnerable instances of self-reflection. As they navigate a bar and the city’s streets, the dichotomy between fleeting elation and the subsequent emotional descent unfolds. This cinematic portrayal masterfully mirrors the song’s lyrical journey, offering a captivating synergy between auditory and visual storytelling.
Rooted in the duo’s admiration for the past and the golden era of music, “Lonely Night” draws inspiration from the timeless sounds of yesteryears. The influence of genres like pop, disco funk, soul lounge, and R&B is evident in the song’s rich textures and evocative melodies. Alexandra John seamlessly merges these elements with their signature Indie Electro Pop style, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary. Collaborating with skilled musicians such as 504 horns, the duo maintains a cohesive and evocative sonic atmosphere, inviting listeners to embark on a sonic journey that harks back to the classics while remaining innovative and fresh.
More than just a song, “Lonely Night” is an anthem for those who have experienced the dichotomy of escape and introspection. Alexandra John encapsulates the ephemeral nature of seeking solace in external distractions, while inviting listeners to embrace the present moment with acceptance and self-discovery. The track’s compelling narrative, complemented by a visually arresting music video, showcases the duo’s prowess in crafting a holistic and immersive experience.
As “Lonely Night” weaves a tapestry of emotions and reflections, Alexandra John continues to solidify their place in the Indie Electro Pop landscape. The song’s ability to resonate with a wide audience, coupled with its fusion of musical influences and a deeply relatable message, marks a significant milestone in the duo’s artistic journey. With this evocative single, Alexandra John cements their status as not only born-on-the-same-day twins but also as artistic kindred spirits, forging a meaningful connection through their music.
ABOUT THE DUO:
The brother and sister duo aren’t just real-life, born-on-the-same-day twins, they’re also musical twins, developing an early bond that has carried them through life. In 2020, they combined their middle names to form Alexandra John, and worked to hone their now infectious brand of Indie Electro Pop that embodies both feminine and masculine energies.
Raised in a musical household in San Francisco, Liza, and Weston Cain both have music traversing through their DNA. Liza spent much of her childhood dancing, acting, and singing in the performing arts, as well as playing the piano. Weston, a season instrumentalist, has been playing the drums since the age of four, picking up other instruments – like the guitar and the piano – as he grew older.
Together, as Alexandra John, Liza and Weston create music that inspires and illuminates the soul.
Alexandra John uses music to address some of our most universal struggles, from anxiety and addiction to grief and loss. Their debut single “Demons” represents these struggles and acknowledges that everyone has their demons.
Their second single “Strung Out,” is all about how people “keep going to the root of the issue expecting different results but end up right where they started. Whether it be romantic, or substance related, we all have forms of self-sabotage and the subconscious desire of self-destruction. We run ourselves till we’re empty and we realize that the form of comfort that we once had from the person, thing or place wasn’t fulfilling, but the cause of our suffering all along.”
Alexandra John’s third single “Lock Me Down” is an amalgamation of both the female & male perspective in the disposable climate of modern-day dating. “At the end of the day, it seems we all want what we can’t have and people tend to not know what it is they really want to begin with.” “Lock Me Down” is a mix of old school rock and new school electro pop.
All three singles were from the band’s debut EP, Healing (released December 9th, 202). “The idea for the EP, Healing came about during the pandemic, we were all grieving our old lives and accepting the new,” explains Weston. “Everyone goes through healing, every day. The EP lyrically breaks down the process of grieving from denial to acceptance. Each song on the EP adds a new layer of acceptance. It’s really about the growth we all go through while experiencing this crazy beautiful thing we call life,” says Liza.
Now based in Los Angeles, and drawing influence from artists like Massive Attack, Glass Animals, and Zero 7, Alexandra John is ready to share their music with the world. Most of all, they look forward to playing their songs live. As Weston acknowledges, “There’s no happier place for us than on stage.”
“We’re a Pop duo, through and through,” adds Liza. “So, check out our music and get lost in all the feels.”
