WHAT THE ARTIST SAYS ABOUT THIS SONG:
“Bobby Hamrick, Jesse Fink, and I (Jess) wrote Giving Up The Dream over Zoom in lockdown… Obviously, we were all raw nerves. I was staying with my parents in Atlanta for three months to not be alone (hi, hello, terminally single), Jesse was in New York unable to even think about leaving his house- same with Bobby- he was in Nashville with a brand new baby.
Prior to signing my new deal with Spirit Music/2Mix Music in February 2020 (yes, right before lockdown, yikes), in the beginning of 2019 my dad called and asked me when I was going to stop. When I was going to give up music and get a real job- get a REAL life. He’s a musician who understands how heartbreaking this business can be, and to be fair, he simply had my best interest at heart. I basically told him, “I love you, but fuck off.”
I told the guys that story and, of course, they GOT IT- because what we do is insane and all consuming and not “NORMAL”. It’s impossible to explain the compulsion we all feel to do this thing we get paid for, because it’s something we would do for free… We can’t help it. Most people don’t understand and most people think we’re insane (and we are, but that’s beside the point, I digress…)
Giving Up The Dream applies to anyone. No matter what your life looks like, who you love, where you live, HOW you live- it’s yours. You can pivot when you want. Say yes when you want. Say no when you want.
I think we sometimes get so caught up in the day to day “have tos”, we forget about long term happiness and “want tos”. Who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks.”
