Stoic – Never Mind

This masterpiece “Never Mind” by British artist Stoic is one of the best rock songs we’ve heard in months! This song left us stuck on repeat for hours and we are so excited to share it with you. Every single second of this song is a masterpiece! The vocal melodies are very catchy and mesh with the well-written lyrics perfectly. Stoic is a professional artist and he has so much talent when it comes to writing songs. Stoic’s voice is a piece of art, he has one of the richest voices you could ever hear and his vocal performance on this song is incredibly catchy. The atmosphere of this record is unique and the production is beautiful and smart. We hope you love this catchy tune as much as we do!

WHAT THE ARTIST SAYS ABOUT THIS SONG:

“I guess never mind centres around the conversation you have between you and your partner, that stumbles along the lines of ‘i’m only going to have one’. Both of you know deep down that this statement is untrue. It wasn’t even that you lied when you said it, it’s just the naivety that exists within you genuinely believed that you had the power to escape the gravity of your best friends, all with nowhere better to be, revelling in the ambient glow of a pub garden at 8 pm on a fine summer evening. No luna tide nor universal pull could escape the inevitable black hole that presides.

‘One more’ quickly descends into two, two becomes shots and before you know it you’re standing in the smoking area of a local nightclub you swore blindly you’d never enter again. It’s a quick phone call to your partner to plead your case, but with spirits behind you, you also know that now is a great time to pour your heart out and tell them how much you appreciate them. If that doesn’t get you out of the dog house, maybe flowers will?”

This main bulk of this song and narrative came together really quickly for me, probably because I’ve walked it personally so many times before, but even in the rewrites of the verse it always felt like it was on the tip of my tongue. It was a fine balance between making myself look like a toxic waste of space and one of those mistakes we-ve all made, and will likely make again. I really wanted to capture the lighthearted side but also the anthemic side of the tale and I think we’ve captured that.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Stoic “a person who can endure pain or hardship without showing their feelings or complaining”

Born Alex James Dobson on 8th Dec 1995…….reborn Stoic 7th January 2015

His young life was relatively unremarkable. Inspired by his grandfather who died when he was very young, he planned to join the army following his education.

After completing his A-levels, and with a year free before joining the army, he decided to do something constructive rather than the ubiquitous “lads holiday” in Ibiza. That decision would shape the rest of his life…

In the summer of 2014, Alex travelled to Botswana for 12 months to carry out aid work on behalf of a home for disadvantaged youths. On January 7th 2015 whilst returning to the school, the Land Rover he was travelling in collided with a cow. Having been ejected through a passenger door, Alex found himself lying on the road… beneath the vehicle, which had flipped over and landed on him.

“In that moment I accepted my fate, the most wonderful wave of peace rushed over me. I could no longer feel the weight of the car, or the burning tarmac under the hot sun, the shards of glass. Just peace. It felt like I detached from my physical body and was floating in infinite space. A realm of light without sight, communication without words. I felt no fear, just peace. I knew that I had a choice I could drift into eternity or I could go back. There was a voice, I don’t know if it was my own or a higher power, but it kept saying ‘not like this, not like this’. I knew I had to fight…”

The damage was extensive. Multiple fractured vertebrae, skin grafts and bruising of the spinal cord… 1 and half months in ICU following spinal fusion and learning to walk again…but he was lucky to be alive.

Despite a lengthy period of recovery and rehabilitation, Alex was still suffering both physically and mentally.

“I dissociated from myself for a long time, I just didn’t want to accept anything was wrong. I felt like if I kept telling myself I was alright, eventually, I would be. It wasn’t until I tried to kill myself a couple of years after the crash that I finally accepted I needed help. I was diagnosed with PTSD and manic depression due to chronic pain a few weeks later.

Somewhere in that, I decided I needed a new hobby; this was around the time Ed Sheeran was taking off and to see another ginger kid taking over with a 6 string I decided to try it. For my 21st birthday, my folks bought me a £40 nylon from Argos…”

After a chance meeting with a studio owner in Stevenage, Alex was introduced to local Music Producer and mix engineer Pascal Magdinier, who had worked with a number of artists including Kim Wilde, Andrew Roachford and Dario G.

“He sent me some rough demos which I listened to… I knew there was something special here. He reminded me of some of my favourite artists like Pink Floyd and Nick Drake…but with a modern and incisive twist… his lyrics were like 21st-century poetry…I wanted in…”

2020 was a debut year for Stoic, seeing the release of Peaches and Days Awake E.P “I was blown away by how well both did, its a surreal feeling to release your own music but to have them so well received is something I still haven’t quite got over” bagging over 60,000 streams on YouTube. Looking forward to 2021 and beyond Stoic is set to release much more. “I’ve got so much more music to release that I can’t wait to share with everyone, it’s my ambition to be consistently releasing new music.”
